Chez Fritz Kilchberg – Interior Design by Ina Rinderknecht

Chez Fritz

Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lake Zurich, Chez Fritz in Kilchberg has been a cherished destination since its inception in 1963. This summer, the iconic lakeside restaurant reopens with a renewed spirit and a carefully reimagined interior by our studio – developed in close collaboration with Property One.

The transformed space warmly invites guests into an environment that feels both elevated and effortlessly relaxed—bathed in natural light, grounded in craftsmanship, and thoughtfully infused with a strong sense of place.

At the core of the design is our studio’s signature approach: subtle rather than ostentatious, contemporary yet rooted in memory, where every detail is carefully selected to create a harmonious atmosphere.

Our palette takes direct inspiration from the lake itself—its ever-changing light, muted tones, and expansive calm. A refined spectrum of cool greens, mineral hues, and soft neutrals flows throughout the space, seamlessly connecting indoors and out.

This sensitive redesign honors the original pavilion structure while introducing a fresh, modern character. Clean architectural lines and generous windows have been enhanced to blur the boundary between the interior and the lake.

Custom pieces—such as deep green Douglas fir cabinetry and handcrafted service stations framed by translucent glass bricks—lend the space a quiet, distinctive character.

Pale limestone floors evoke sun-drenched Mediterranean terraces. Emerald Jadore quartzite dining tables reflect the shimmering surface of water. Upholstered benches in patterned Dedar fabric recall the relaxed elegance of mid-century beach clubs, reimagined with a modern, understated touch.

The terrace embodies the restaurant’s effortless charm and Mediterranean spirit. The outdoor area is defined by cold-pressed floor tiles crafted from raw and recycled materials, forming a captivating graphic pattern. Custom-built benches upholstered with luxurious fabrics are enhanced by vibrant accent cushions, while handcrafted mosaic tables introduce an artistic flair. This combination creates a welcoming yet sophisticated outdoor setting perfect for relaxation and enjoyment.
